Web applications for Mobile – hurdles and gotchas, Luka Kladaric

Developing mobile web – examples and experience, Merlin Rebrović and Zoran Meliš
Why mobile web? Which technologies to use? What to look out for? Testing anyone? Theory aside, let’s answer those questions through live examples (on web, mobile & emulators) and our experience in developing mobile weather forecast web site (m.kadcekisa.com) and one under construction (should be live in a couple of weeks). We’ll be talking, and mostly showing, about development process and environment, testing, things we did ok and those we didn’t.

Fusing the mobile and desktop app experience, Matic Bitenc
How to go the other way round and expand your mobile app into a full fledged desktop web app experience. What to put in the mobile app, what on the web and how to make the experience of switching between both as seamless as possible. All that while supporting multiple mobile platforms, in our case Android, iPhone, Nokia Maemo and Palm Web OS. Where the complexity traps are and where a lot of apps go wrong. The talk will focus on the usability perspective of guiding the users to use both platforms with the most gain and ease.

Mobile Firefox Add-ons, Brian King
It might be obvious to say this, but Firefox Mobile add-ons are much different beasts than their desktop counterparts. All the goodness of the Mozilla Platform is there and available to use, but the UI is completely different. Less hooks are available simply because there is less space, but the design and UI flow provide different challenges.
For authors porting existing add-ons, I want to challenge you to really think whether you should do it. Ask yourself, does it make sense in this context? Does it fit into the browsing habits of users of smaller devices, which is different than desktop usage? For example, users on the go want more information suggested to them as opposed to hunting for it which can be cumbersome. Without being discouraging, my goal is to give inspiration for new ideas. Some of the best add-ons will be ones built from the ground up that take advantage of device capabilities such as GPS and voice.

Windows Phone 7 – developer’s view, Aleš Rosina
We will take a look at how to develop apps for upcoming Windows Phone 7, which tools to use, how to put apps on marketplace etc. All the details will be revealed on the spot, since a lot of information is still unknown. Let the coding begins!

Android Scripting Environment, Nikola Plejić

The Android Scripting Environment (ASE) exposes a subset of the Android API to be used in several high-level languages like Python, Ruby and JavaScript. Some of the implemented API calls allow interesting things such as making phone calls, sending text messages and polling location and sensor data which can be used for both
automating repetitive tasks on your phone and rapid prototyping of features for your Android application.

Event Vision, Ken Yasue
This application is used for every kind of events like fairs, festival, party..itd. The first client is a Japanese college, they will use this for open college. Event
organizers have to entry all information which is based on location. And visitors can see on their mobile phones screen these information, like a layer on camera view.

This video explains clearly how it will look like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgTwSXK_5dg

And this is one of features, we enabled to put 3D objects based on GPS coordinate to be more interactive and give entertainment to visitors. These are examples:

  • Put objects to several location and let visitors to collect all of them to get a present.
  • Make mini game and when visitor clear them, get a present.
  • Put interactive objects on important location ( where organizers want gather people )
  • Enable to visitors to click information and open specific url for more detailed information.
  • Enable to put tweet.

All of these features are made to achieve events purpose. For this college case, give students information more efficiently than paper based catalog, and give them special experience. And collect their email address to send emails for the future.

Touch-to-Communicate (state-of-the art Telco Tangible User Interface), Klemen Peternel
The core of presented solution is an innovative and internationally awarded Touch-to-Communicate technology, which introduces a new modality into the process of initiating and control of telecommunications channels. Physical objects tagged with RFID tags and a RFID reader are used instead of navigating a more or less complicated user interface. Information about the contact between the reader and chips is transmitted wirelessly to a call server controlling the telecommunications devices and network via APIs.

The solution is especially suitable for the people with disabilities and the elderly. Instead of using a small display and learning the modalities of the user interface, a user can create and update her own personalized user interface used to make calls, create conferences, set forwarding, redirect call and send simple SMS messages. A reference setup is a pin board with photos of friends & family, where each photo is equipped with an RFID tag (as a sticker on the back of the photo). A landline IP phone is equipped with an RFID reader in the handset. The user needs to only touch the photo using the handset and the call to that person is established.

A platform for simple ad-hoc SMS-based voting, Darko Bodnaruk
U-vote is a simple web-based service that enables anyone to setup a free ad-hoc voting using only SMS messaging. Only regular non-premium SMS messages are used for actual voting as it’s the only technology that *all* mobile users have access to, know how to use and view as basically free. The service is envisioned as a platform: it provides only the technological means for collecting the votes, while the voting organizer takes care of notifying his or her audience and of presenting the results (though the application tries to help there, too).

The talk will focus on the simplicity of the current implementation, whether the service has any chance for an uptake, on the possibilities of extending the platform and finally the possibilities for monetization.

Mobile marketing and advertising in small markets, Matevz Klanjsek

For quite some time mobile marketing and advertising were predicted to explode. It looks like this time has finally come – at least in the US. With it’s well regulated and clearly structured ecosystem and massive scale the US present a perfect ground for the rise of mobile. But what about Slovenia, Croatia or Austria? Can mobile marketing and advertising be cost effective in such small markets? Can the smallness present an opportunity? It’s clear that mobile in those markets is and will be different and unique. But it might also be much more interesting and innovative. Brands, agencies and especially mobile start-ups should acknowledge the absence of big global players and turn it into an opportunity for themselves.
